Bone Health Program

Much progress has been made identifying factors that impact bone health, such as lifestyle, nutrition and genetics. While some factors such as family history, ethnicity and gender are beyond our control, other contributing factors such as nutritional status, stress, digestive health, and levels of Vitamin D and other nutrients are within our power to modify and improve. These factors can have a significant impact on overall wellness and bone health in particular

While medication for rebuilding bone may be indicated in some instances, prescription medication can be harsh with undesirable side effects. At North Country Holistic we believe that our bodies have an ability to heal from many disorders and are capable of building and strengthening bone when given the proper conditions.

Our Program begins with an initial consultation in which your DEXA or XRAY results will be reviewed.and compared with your previous results if available. A complete history will be taken with particular attention to identifying any and all factors that may have contributed to bone loss. Usually lab testing will be ordered to assess vitamin levels, and to look for evidence of food sensitivities or allergies, inflammation and other factors that impact on overall wellness and bone health in particular. We also order a serum and/or urine NTX – a test that identifies ongoing bone loss by detecting breakdown products of bone in the blood or urine. This test is particularly valuable as it can be repeated in three months (rather waiting one or two years for another DEXA) to assess the improvement or reversal in the degree of bone loss as you move through the Program.

On your subsequent visit lab results will be reviewed and recommendations made for minimizing bone loss going forward. Typically, a food plan will be advised based on your laboratory results and designed to improve bone health. If indicated, specific bone building nutrients and supplements will be prescribed. Exercise and stress management recommendations will be made as well as any other factors which have been identified will be addressed,

Patients are typically seen again at three and six months to assess progress and to retest for bone health markers.

If you have been identified as having bone loss on the basis of testing or if you have risk factors that might place you at risk for bone loss, consider participation in our innovative Program.
